Sista Jean & CB hold nothing back when it comes to what they play and sing about. Their songs come alive in many hues and rhythms.
Sista Jean has a music career ranging from background singer (with Tina Turner, Mick Jagger, Keb' Mo', Celine Dion, John Hiatt, and Cher), to the “International Dance Diva” known as Pepper MaShay (with the international Billboard charting song “Dive Into The Pool”), then bringing it all all back home to her blues and acoustic music roots (with the Sista Jean & CB aptly titled debut album Back To The Root). CB (aka CarlyleBarriteau) was influenced by George Benson to become a guitar player and has performed with Ben E. King,The Miracles, Paul Taylor, Ricky Lee Jones, and Patti Austin.
After touring the world the past 3 years with Hugh Laurie & The Copper Bottom Band, Sista Jean returns to team up with CB, who recently toured with Bobby Caldwell, to create the 2 Song Double Pack plus full sophomore album Requiem For A Heavyweight (Tribute To Odetta). Odetta Holmes, the Queen of American Folk Music (aptly named by Martin Luther King, Jr.) and a National Endowment For The Arts' National Medal Of Arts recipient, played a major influence in Sista Jean's decision to become a singer. Sista Jean's sultry emotional contralto vocals teamed with CB's acoustic guitar playing have created an album that is a way of honoring a woman who not only influenced Bob Dylan, Harry Belafonte, Joan Baez, Mavis
Staples, Carly Simon and Janis Joplin, but was also considered “The Voice of the Civil Rights Movement”. Sista Jean states, “I picked the songs for the 2 Song Double Pack because for one, they were songs that Odetta really put her heart and soul into them, and second they are "Lead Belly"songs. Lead Belly was the stage name for Huddie William Ledbetter who was an American folk and blues musician. While on tour with Hugh Laurie & The Copper Bottom Band, we would do
a couple of Lead Belly songs and they really spoke to me. The man really got down and deep into his lyrics. I feel that Odetta felt the same way about songs like "Easy Rider" and "Alabama Bound". Those kinds of songs are just hard to escape when you're fighting for every inch of life you're living.”
