Regrettably, The Servant is a perfect example of an excellent, risk-taking CD that fell through the cracks simply because it didn't fit neatly into any one category. Rob McGaha basically comes from an R&B/funk/urban contemporary perspective, but the unpredictable singer, trumpeter, songwriter and producer also shows an awareness of jazz, hip-hop, dance music and rock on this eclectic release. While "I'll Never Know" and "Just Clown 'n' Around" go for a gritty funk-rock approach along the lines of Sly & the Family Stone and Prince, "Back Porch" combines funk with jazz and rap. McGaha's trumpet playing clearly owes a lot to Miles Davis (especially 1980s fusion efforts like Tutu), and his appreciation of Davis is especially obvious when he provides a hip-hop-influenced take on his standard "All Blues." As much as The Servant had going for it, it's such a shame that it was ignored by commercial radio.~Alex Henderson
