AKaleidoscope Men is the third studio album of the psychedelic band Los Mac’s, released in December 1967 by RCA-Victor. It’s commonly known as the fundamental album of the latinoamerican psychedelia movement. It certainly has a very uncommon lyric and musical style, considering the release date. Thanks to lyrics dedicated to politics, drugs, poetry and a particular beat-style, Kaleidoscope Men became a very popular album at the time and it’s considered “legend” nowadays, still being an important collection piece for psychedelia and 60´s beat lovers.
It was on this album that the song “La Muerte de mi Hermano” was released. It was a very crude and political song that contrasted with milder and maybe shy songs from other contemporary bands.
This album is considered by far one of the most importan ones in the history of Chilean rock, together with “Aguaturbia” (homonimous band name), “Del Volar de las Palomas” by Los Blops and “Fictions” by Vidrios Quebrados.
By the year 1967, both national and international music was at its best, with incredible experimental and fusion albums. All this influence was absorbed by the members of Los Mac’s who, after dealing with the influence of Beatlemania style, decided to start composing with original songs, showing their composing and musical hability. Gathering the influences of Bob Dylan, the beat-poetry of Allen Ginsberg, the special sound of Vanilla Fudge and The Id, they started creating their great album. It took them a little less than a year to finish.
In Kaleidoscope Men you can also note the influence of “Fictions” by Vidrios Quebrados, Pink Floyd and in a lesser way Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Beatles, that surprised the world a few months before the album’s release.
