Metalwood 2 is more diverse, both sonically and compositionally, than the band's previous effort. Brad Turner introduces a wider palette of keyboard textures, particularly on the slamming "Spesh," the agitated "Newton," the stormy finale "Darren Vs. the Ants," and an atmospheric interlude called "Easter Island." On the funky, lighthearted "Who's Bob?" he links his Rhodes to an organ patch so that both sound simultaneously; on the more intense "DMD" he plays trumpet through effects and ends with a surprising trumpet/keyboard breakdown. Other highlights include the mellow, hypnotic "Tuesday," the ballads "U" and "Eulogy," and the Jeckyll/Hyde number "Hillcrest," which alternates between heavy metal bombast and soprano sax-based lyricism. The additional bells and whistles don't at all prevent the band from smoking; saxophonist Mike Murley, bassist Chris Tarry, and drummer Ian Froman are all in terrific form.
