A varied selection of works by Scots-born composer Oliver Knussen, here conducting his own works with the London Sinfonietta and soloists Barry Tuckwell (French Horn) and soprano Lucy Shelton.
Orchestral works, they each contain the imaginative writing and fine orchestral colours and textures one associates with this composer; the Horn Concerto is a particularly fine work that has entered the instrumental repertoire, played here by the musician for whom it was written.
Knussen was a modern composer, but fairly accessible with a keen ear for subtlety, pleasing tone-colours and playful, wistful little melodic lines; this album is perhaps a good introduction to his sound-world.
