In addition to the artistic and enthusiastically articulate playing of Yuja Wang, this performance with Claudio Abbado conducting the Mahler Chamber Orchestra has nostalgic value. Abbado is not only the founder of this orchestra but this performance also came into being about 3 years before his death at the age of 80. I have appreciated Abbado's conducting with the numerous orchestras he led, and am fond of his recording legacy with the Berlin Philharmonic. This recording of Rachmaninov's 2nd with Claudio Abbado and Yuja Wang presents us with a musical delight showcasing an artistic collaboration of musical excellence representing a diversity of age of the performers as well as representing a diversity of their professional musical performance experience. Listening to this performance makes me well up with a deep sense of gratification.
