The result of ten years of collaboration, the album "ESTAMPES" composed by Mathieu Bélis and Guillaume Barraud reveals an intimate repertoire. The synergy between the piano and the bansuri (a large Indian transverse flute) gives rise to a language of its own. The struck strings and the breath of the bamboo intertwine to sketch brightly coloured canvases. It is an ode to travel, an escape.
The interesting piano/flute duo takes us into the heart of their heterogeneous universe where contemporary jazz, classical, pop and traditional music blend together.
Immersed in classical and contemporary music, Mathieu Bélis started playing the piano with his father before taking a classical training. It was after listening to a Chick Coréa solo piano record that he became interested in improvisation. He developed his own musical language inspired by musicians such as Egberto Gismonti, Keith Jarrett, Anouar Brahem... Fascinated by new inspirations, he also looked to the Middle East and North Africa. He is followed by Dino Saluzzi and Antoine Hervé before being at the origin of several formations.
Surprisingly, Guillaume Barraud started playing the guitar at a very young age, and it was only after meeting the Indian music legend Hariprasad Chaurasia that he found his own voice with the subtle and bewitching sound of the bamboo flute. Within a few years, he assimilated the spirit and authenticity of the tradition. He worked on numerous projects before meeting Mathieu Bélis in Paris and setting up several groups with him.
Their strong complicity is to be discovered at the Baiser Salé during this new edition of the Pianomania Festival!
