12. 25 Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel, Op. 24 (27:17)
A fascinating disc that underlines the impact that his study of baroque music had on Brahms. The five dances in baroque forms that open the recital are already filled with melodic and pianistic ideas that Brahms would later exploit (spot which two chamber works Brahms re-used themes in!). And the Busoni transcriptions of six of the chorale preludes, which Brahms wrote in the year of his death – hark back to the same forms. In between are the Handel variations, played with a lucidity and lyricism that make the connections to the music of an earlier age all the clearer. In short, not just a highly entertaining disc, but one that gives a fascinating insight into Brahms as a composer.
