The Psychic Horns are Dan Moretti on woodwinds, John Allmark on trumpet, and John Wheeler on trombone. This record is a "reunion" of sorts: The group disbanded in the mid-'90s to pursue independent careers. Here, they're joined by Ben Cook on keyboards, Bruce Bartlett on guitar, Bill Miele on bass, and Vinny Pagano and Marty Richards trading off on drums. (Bob Bowlby puts in a guest baritone sax appearance as well.) The band's recipe includes Tower of Power-style groove, urban boogie and blues, Motown ("People Make the World Go Round"), and the occasional funked-up standard ("Have You Met Miss Jones"), all served up with jazz-savvy improvisation. The results are palatable but kind of nondescript.
