Swedish soprano Matilda Sterby’s current and forthcoming engagements include Marenka in Smetena’s The Bartered Bride for Gothenburg Opera, followed by Micaëla in Bizet's Carmen, Mimi in Puccini's La Boheme, and 2 Magd in R.Strauss' Elektra as a member of the soloist ensemble at Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe.
Recent appearances include Amanda in Lars Johan Werle’s Tintomara for Läckö Slott in Sweden, La Contessa in Le Nozze di Figaro for Hannover Staatsoper and for Stadttheater Klagenfurt, and Fiordiligi Cosi fan tutte for Gothenburg Opera (filmed and streamed but not performed due to Covid-19). And during Spring 2022 Matilda recorded a CD of modern art songs, by Swedish contemporary composer Hans Gefors, with pianist Mårten Landström.
In 2019 Matilda made her critically acclaimed debut as La Contessa in Le Nozze di Figaro at Läckö Slott. Other past engagements include Donna Anna in Don Giovanni for Dala-Floda Opera Festival, Frasquita in Carmen for Östgötamusiken and Emmy Perth in Marschner’s Der Vampyr for Läckö Slott.
She has appeared in concert in, amongst others, Monteverdi’s Vespers with the Eric Ericsson Chamber Choir at Stockholm Concert House, Beethoven's 9th Symphony with VÄGUS and Simon Phipps at Gothenburg Concert House, Donna Anna Don Giovanni as her examination performance at Wermland Opera, and Frasquita in Östgötamusikens concert production of Carmen.
Matilda Sterby completed her final year of study at University College of Opera in Stockholm in 2019 under the tutelage of American baritone Robert Hyman. Matilda also attended the soloist programme at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo and Oslo Opera Academy, as a student of prof. Barbro Marklund. During her studies, Matilda worked on the roles of Mimi La Boheme, Liú Turandot, Contessa Le Nozze di Figaro and Marguerite Faust. In her graduation production Matilda performed Donna Anna Don Giovanni at Wermland Opera.
Matilda is a recipient of several scholarships both in Norway and Sweden such as the Swedish Wagner Society and the Swedish Royal Academy of Music. In 2016 Matilda won the opportunity to perform as a soloist with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra in De Unges Konsert /The Young’s Concert, conducted by Kristiina Poska in Grieg Concert Hall, Norway. Among the young soloists in the concert she was also awarded the Audience’s Prize. In August 2021 Matilda was given the second prize in Havets röst (The Voice of the Sea) voice competition and in February 2022 she was the First Prize winner in the Hjördis Schymberg Award. The Jury’s motivation reads: “For her beautiful lyric soprano voice, her clear musicality and her exciting stage presence, Matilda Sterby wins First Prize."
