Guitarist, composer, and bandleader Liberty Ellman was born in London, and raised in New York and the San Francisco Bay-Area. In recent years he's worked on a variety of projects with saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa, pianists Vijay Iyer and Omar Sosa, Hip-Hop groups Midnight Voices and the Coup, innovative Koto artist Miya Masaoka, and composed for and performed internationally with the Tony award-winning San Francisco Mime Troupe. Liberty has also worked with Henry Threadgill's group ZOOID, Greg Osby's "Special Project" featuring Oliver Lake and Bob Stewart, and Gregg Bendian's Mahavishnu Project, performing the music of John McLaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra. As a player, Liberty cites being influenced by a wide variety of guitarists: Grant Green, Pat Martino, Jimi Hendrix, Ali Farka Toure, BB King and Wes Montgomery among others. But beyond the guitar his greatest musical inspiration comes from innovators like Ellington, Mingus, Miles, Andrew Hill, and other artists who ceaselessly search for new textures and find imaginative ways to work with a group.
