ÖNDER is not your average jazz ensemble. The band has an unconventional line-up of double bass, bass guitar, two bass clarinets and drums. A conscious choice, says initiator and band leader Jort Terwijn. “I felt a strong urge to do things differently in terms of line-up”, says Jort. And yet the band does not necessarily sound 'bassy', he adds, “what we do is quite orchestrated”. Influences from improvised music, jazz, folk music and pop come together in strong beats and hypnotic soundscapes.
