Semiramide by Gioachino Rossini transcribed for two clarinets? Yes, you read right for two clarinets! Benedetto Carulli (1797-1877) following the enormous success of the opera represented for the first time at the Teatro la Fenice in Venice (exactly two hundred years ago) chose Semiramide for his collection published by the publisher Lucca: "Theatrical melodies exhibited in the form of concertante duets for two clarinets”. Benedetto Carulli was first clarinet at the Teatro alla Scala and teacher at the Milan Conservatory. His clarinet writing always requires a great technical as well as musical and expressive commitment: in the five duets from Semiramide the voices of the two instruments faithfully reproduce the singers' parts with additions of virtuosic developments and interweaving of truly remarkable effect as in the famous theme of the Symphony, where the two clarinets engage in a real musical duel on the last sixteenth note. Two hundred years have passed between the debut of Semiramide and this world premiere recording testifies once again how the opera came out of the theaters to become usable by all.
