Phil Woods - alto saxophone Steve Gilmore - bass Mike Melillo - piano Bill Goodwin - drums
A follow-up to The Phil Woods Quartet Volume 1, this set (recorded live in Austin, Texas) has lengthy versions of "Milestones," Steve Swallow's underrated "Eidendown," Horace Silver's "Strollin'" and (from 1978) pianist Mike Melillo's "See, Hunt & Liddy"; all of the selections are at least ten minutes long. Woods, Melillo, bassist Steve Gilmore and drummer Bill Goodwin had by 1979 become one of the top regularly working bop-based acoustic jazz groups around. The leader's enthusiastic alto and the tight rhythm section made for a mutually inspiring combination, and virtually all of Woods' records since first forming his combo in 1976 are well worth acquiring.~Scott Yanow
