EMI's Bis Bossa Nova is a very nice two-disc set of prime Marcos Valle recordings, spanning 1963 to 1974. Each disc runs (separately) chronologically, moving with ease from Valle's early successes ("Ela e Carioca," "Samba de Verão," "Preciso Aprender a Ser So") to his funkier, more experimental '70s tracks ("Wanda Vidal," "Vento Sul," "O Cafona," "Com Mais de 30"). The Japanese Cafe Apres-Midi fits more tracks onto just one disc, but Bis Bossa Nova is another excellent compilation of Brazil's overlooked genius. © John Bush
