Michael Kamen - Concerto For Saxophone featuring David Sanborn (1990)

The "featuring David Sanborn" aspect of this artistic and intriguing disc will bring out the jazz faithful, but lovers of modern classical music may be the real winners upon hearing multi-instrumentalist/conductor Kamen's striking compositions. The Concerto is divided into two segments: three lengthy but often soaring Sanborn/orchestra duets and five mainly mellow radio friendly pop-jazz pieces that sound like outtakes from Sanborn and Bob James' Double Vision album. Despite appearances by Eric Clapton and Elton John's percussionist Ray Cooper on these latter tunes, don't expect the funky and upbeat landscapes Sanborn is most at home in. But his romancing is top notch as always. While it's not the most commercially appealing album in the world, it's still fascinating hearing Sanborn in such a bold setting. ~ Jonathan Widran, All Music Guide
