The timeless and archetypal hero myth is the inspiration for pianist Joel Trigg’s second album as a bandleader. Habits of the Hero celebrates the unending quest to overcome adversity and restore balance in a world forever sliding into entropy––a story that plays out across diverse human mythologies, as relevant and fascinating to our modern world as it was to the ancient. These grand narratives are proxies for all human struggle, from the epic to the seemingly mundane, with the adventures of Gilgamesh, St George, Wonder Woman, and Luke Skywalker serving their highest purpose as inspiration for our own lives. Saving the world begins with getting up in the morning, showing love and compassion to those around you, contributing to your community, and staying true to yourself day by day. A hero is made (and love restored) not in a single sweeping gesture, but in the consistent virtue of the baker, doctor, parent, and friend––the habits of the hero. "It's my hope that this music can be a source of inspiration to follow the Little Voice of wisdom that dwells within each of us, and to engage forthrightly in the ongoing struggle to improve our lives and the lives of others. The world will always need saving, and it's up to us to save it, beginning with the daily opportunities for compassion and courage that present themselves to us along our path." - Joel Joel is a pianist, composer, and singer who makes music to explore and celebrate the “pattern that connects” between the nodes of experience. Sound signals and symbolises these relationships––between people, nature, ideas, and the forces that motivate reality. Joel’s compositions are inspired by stories, driven by action and feeling, and infused with movement and colour. Best known as a founding member of local jazz punks The Rookies and psychedelic electro-fusion ensemble Claps, Joel released his first album as a bandleader in 2023 entitled Home in Space––a collection of works for piano trio in the spirit of Bill Evans, Brad Mehldau, and Andrea Keller.
