They say the first cut is the deepest, but when it comes to Madrid-based Tiburona, I find myself favoring the second. While I had no qualms about the band’s 2021 debut Sola y Feliz, the follow-up Nos Extinguimos is a remarkable leap forward on virtually all fronts, from the songwriting through to the execution and production.

Nos Extinguimos sounds like a contemporary take on ’60s garage and girl group. It is indie pop with a powerful edge, something to dance to or rock out with depending on your preferred mode of movement. In any case, Tiburona has written some exceptional tunes and their harmonies and musicianship add a seductive and appealing layer to the overall sound on the new LP.

The album kicks off strongly with Pensando en ti, setting the tone for a compelling A-side that includes standout tracks like Horizonte de sucesos and Persona favorita, Pt. 1. A noteworthy inclusion at the midway point is a delightful Spanish version of The Clovers’ Love Potion No. 9, providing a charming bridge to a B-side that holds its own. Tiburona prove to be far from a one-trick pony on Nos Extinguimos. Their songs are adventures of their own with captivating detours. As listeners, we are left with one option only – to follow blindly.
