Long ago – or was it yesterday, a man cherished a dream. In fact it was the dream that ran away with him. She had purposely picked him out, and would not take no for an answer. For a while he incited the illusion that he still held the reins, but soon he knew he’d hoped in vain. There was nothing else for it. He was driven to a shot in the dark. His only option was to make it as beautiful as possible.

The result is ‘Songs for the bookshelf’, a music album mixed by John Wood, a sound engineer and producer best known for his work with Nick Drake, John Martyn and Sandy Denny. ‘Songs for the bookshelf’ is a singer-songwriter album inspired by many artist including Elliott Smith, Leonard Cohen, Bright Eyes, etc.

The project started after the birth of his daughter four years ago. The music album is combined with a (digital) book of prose , poetry and song lyrics. The idea to release a music album with a book has gradually emerged. It was a coming together of many small fragments. A small idea brought in more, and when more and more came together it resulted in the project ‘Songs for the bookshelf’. The music has always been the starting point. The music comes with a sort of spontaneous but disjointed vocabulary. Separately, the texts have gradually grown, often while walking or commuting trips. Some Dutch texts finally became English song lyrics, while others led to the idea of a book. What he loves most with music and words is to grasp the ungraspable.
