More for the Mender is the debut release from Ashland, Oregon based trio Kites & Crows. Their music is described as rustic Americana with rich chamber folk orchestration. For a trio they create a very rich attractive depth to their music which owes as much to the space they allow as it does to how they fill it. There is an abundance of instruments at play, some adding a central melody, others accentuate emotional depths and the quirky bring an original charm as ably demonstrated on Little Glass Baby Doll.
The carefully chosen arrangements perfectly reflect the emotionally weighted lyrics of Mysha Caruso. Whilst many are contemplative songs, reflections on love and loss, there are also bright and upbeat moments, Found Some Color moves from heartache to a more foot tapping driving force and New Way To Believe is a hopeful dream chaser for starting over again. Overall, More for the Mender offers a balance between the contemplative and uplifting, wrapped in beautiful warm tones that have give it a remote feel, far removed from the everday hustle and bustle, harmonies enrich this vision of rural rustic charm, a perfect winter evening companion: reflecting on the past and looking forward to the future.
