EAST MEETS VEST is an encounter between an authentic, Southern-bred piano pounder and some of the most celebrated blues musicians in Canada. Bassist Gary Kendall and drummer Mike Fitzpatrick, both members of Downchild, make up arguably the best rhythm section in Canadian blues. Fathead's amazing Teddy Leonard plays guitar. As for the front man ... David Vest is the real thing. He was raised in Alabama and in juke joints all along the Gulf Coast. He played with Big Joe Turner in the early 1960s and toured with Jimmy T99 Nelson and Floyd Dixon. He was co-leader of the legendary Paul deLay Band. Shortly after he moved north of the 49th parallel, Vest entered the western Canadian blues scene with incendiary performances at the Edmonton and Calgary blues festivals. His first venture into a Canadian studio helped Victoria's Bill Johnson land a Juno nomination for Still Blue.
By early 2012, David was touring Ontario as a Maple Blues Award nominee and recording EAST MEETS VEST. What came together at Canterbury Music in Toronto on Mardi Gras Day 2012 wasn't just history, it was magic. And now the show is on tour, beginning at the Tremblant International Blues Festival and going wherever the road might lead, "as long as the flavor lasts.
