He was born in 1952 to a very religious, Italian family. He and his three younger sisters grew up in Matawan, New Jersey.
Carlo’s musicality first emerged when he joined the marching band in high school. From there, he followed his passion to Trenton State College where he studied music.
Throughout college, Carlo played saxophone with a band called Dharma. In 1974, around the time of Carlo’s graduation, Dharma was invited to take their band on the road.
At the same time, Carlo was offered a job as the music teacher at the high school he had attended. It was a difficult choice for Carlo but in the end he decided to stay in Red Bank. During his life he remained committed to the local community and eventually became the musical director in the school district.
Over the course of his teaching career, Carlo also performed with a band called Street Light at weddings, conventions and affairs. He was very enthusiastic about the local music scene, and sat in with a large number of bands in the area over the years. He was also one of the founders of the Red Bank Jazz and Blues Festival.
Carlo’s sole album, Piper of Dreams, came out in 1979. He played the majority of the instruments. He was very into fusion jazz when the album was recorded. You can hear his spirituality and belief in cosmic energy in the songs on the album - like a kaleidoscope of new age and experimental jazz.
Unfortunately, Carlo was not successful in getting Piper of Dreams distributed. Very few copies sold, something that remained a disappointment for him.
Though Carlo liked to keep an air of mystery about him, he was quite popular and well liked by his students and colleagues. One year they even named a star after him, calling it Cosmic Carlo.
Carlo Vinci Jr. passed away on July 29, 2004.
His death was mourned by a heartbroken community with hundreds of people attending his memorial service which lasted over two days.
