"This recording, performed in Russian, features secular choral songs by major composers and several fine, lesser-known ones. Three of Taneyev's works are particularly interesting and attractive. Arensky's design of Pushkin's "Upas Tree" is very dramatic and touching.
The Houston Chamber Choir has a very smooth, clean American choral sound that goes well with these songs. Russian Russian choirs don't sound like them, but the diction is better than most non-Russian groups, and the intonation is better than most Russian choirs. Robert Simpson is proficient in the Russian choral style, but does not fall into some of the manners associated with it."
