When they perform the early symphonies of Franz Schubert, Thomas Dausgaard and the Swedish Chamber Orchestra employ authentic Classical practices that give the music a special luster in the super audio format. Not only is the sound bright and scintillating, due to the pristine string sonorities and the distinctive winds, but the lines and harmonies are transparent and easy to hear, making these performances of the Symphony No. 1 in D major, D. 82, and the Symphony No. 2 in B flat major, D. 125, immediately appealing. The filler pieces, the Funeral March from the opera Adrast and the Rosamunde Overture are later works by a few years, and while they require a Romantic period treatment -- less vibrant, perhaps, but warmer and more evocative in their moods -- Dausgaard is careful to maintain the same clarity and balance that stands out in the symphonies. These recordings were made in June 2013 in the Örebro Concert Hall in Sweden, so there is consistent sound quality and the same polish that is characteristic of the previous recordings in this excellent Schubert cycle. Highly recommended.
