This album takes us to the Turkish town of Hasankeyf: once one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world, home of empires and civilisations, now deep underwater as part of a project to dam the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. How do you articulate the heartbreak of erasing 12,000 years of history and the drowning the homes of tens of thousands of people?

Composer Rafael Karlen and lyricist Pearly Black chose to focus on questioning what is gained, what is lost and how we choose what to preserve and remember. This thought-provoking and profoundly moving work is performed by two of Australia’s finest contemporary music ensembles: the instrumentalists of Camerata – Queensland’s Chamber Orchestra and the brilliant singers of The Australian Voices, with the plaintive saxophone of Rafael Karlen weaving its spell in and around the orchestra and choir.
