"Jazz Popular Brasileiro" is a fine introduction to the vibrant music of Gustavo Marques & Pororocas and gives as a valuable insight into the scope of Brazilian music far from its native shores.
Vocalist and guitarist Gustavo Marques grew up surrounded by music in his home city of Sao Paulo, Brazil.
His father encouraged him to play guitar, and later Gustavo studied at the 'Groove' School of Music for six years, and soon after formed his first band 'Rebento' (Luiz Roberto, bass; Eduardo Marques, drums) playing MPB (Musica Popular Brasileira).
With Pororocas (Anselmo Netto, mandolin and percussion; Matheus Nova, bass; Eduardo Marques, drums) Gustavo plays a mixture of Bossa nova, Brazilian funk, Chorinho, Afox? and Samba.
The music presented in this album is in some way typical of the fusing of Brazilian and Jazz forms combining as it does four Brazilian artists with two Europeans melding some now classic Brazilian song forms with jazz influences. So we have here a diverse recital indeed, mixing established Brazilian pieces with new originals and including a standard song adapted as a bossa alongside a virtuoso performance of one of the most familiar South American melodies. "Jazz Popular Brasileiro " is a fine introduction to the vibrant music of Gustavo Marques & Pororocas and gives US a valuable insight into the scope of Brazilian music far from it's native shore with these London musicians. Featuring Anselmo Netto, Dudu Marques and Heidi Vogel.
