An excellent recording from an organ steeped in history both old and new. The Arp-Schnitger organ in Cappel was made famous by Helmut Walcha. Harald Vogel serves up an exceptionally well balanced recital that keeps you engaged, and eager to listen to the next track. The pieces are well chosen both in style and performance, but adding to this there is a very well planned arrangement in which the order of the pieces are addressed in this recording.
You get Vogel's thoughtful playing that is second to none. He has the technical proficiency of a master with the wisdom of choice of instrument and tonal coloration that comes with maturity. Even the ubiquitous Toccata and Fugue in D minor BWV 565 is played here in a manner that both seasoned listeners and novices will find interesting. A most compelling part of the recording is the Schnitger organ itself. There we have an organ sonically rendered with rare clarity and realism. It strikes a balance between being too large to be reproduced well by a modest stereo and sounding too small or weak. A great choice of instrument for the program material.
A most highly recommended recording, one not to miss out on as a collector, and great as an introduction into the music that can be elicited from the pipe organ.
