Misha Panfilov - To the Mesosphere and Beyond (2024) [Hi-Res]

The spacey sound of the title definitely gets the groove right here – as the funky currents of the great Misha Panfilov are trained on some more cosmic elements than usual – almost as if his group here is trying for the sort of territory you might expect from Sun Ra! The music has lots of cool electric piano and electronics, but these are mixed with great horn work on tenor, flute, and trumpet – with plenty of percussion layered underneath – all with this great blend of earthy elements and more skyward-leaning sounds – maybe not entirely in the territory of Ra and the Arkestra, but definitely a jazzy exploration of the cosmos!
