Kankou Kouyate comes from Mali. She is part of the griot tradition, generations of musicians and singers who preserve and pass on the rich Malian musical heritage. Her uncle is n’goni virtuoso Bassekou Kouyate.

Malian musical traditions have been under threat in recent years and it is particularly important that artists and musicians are able to flourish and grow and find recognition outside of Mali.

She has a beautiful voice, a voice that is full of emotion. It’s a pleasure to listen to whether you understand the lyrics or not. It has a hypnotic quality and there’s a gentleness that sometimes seems at odds with the translation of the lyrics. Maybe that is the true art of persuasion.
