Beguiling debut album of wavy, shoegazy UK neo-soul croon by Deptford musician Bad With Phones, on a lowkey contemporary London tip shared with Mica and Tirzah, Sampha, Coby Sey, Dean Blunt, James Massiah .

After sneaking out debut ‘Marinade’ on Don’t Sleep in 2021, Bad With Phones chimes with a prevailing wave of recombinant artists from the big shmoke on ‘Crash’, marking a big step up in terms of stylistic variation, emotional register, and absorbing lyrics that bring us right inside his world. His 10 songs shift in patterns from grungy soul downstrokes to gospel-leaning blooz via propulsive post-punk and drill rap, whilst his vocal personas also shapeshift modes to best tell his story, deftly switching from Sampha-esque neo-soul plead to spoken word on the louche post-punk of ‘(call me) Friday’, to rap his perspective on a night out bucking on the garys set to squashed drill and jazz with ‘InAWeek (anything can happen)’, or stripping it all back to autotuned croon over slick new wave groove like John Maus meets Coby Sey in ‘drive’.

Reckon we’ll be hearing a lot more from this guy in future.
