Originally A Cor do Som was the name of the instrumental band that accompanied Os Novos Baianos.

A Cor do Som is a Brazilian group that was created from the entourage of musicians accompanying Moraes Moreira after leaving Os Novos Baianos.

A Cor do Som was founded in 1977, experimenting with new patterns of sound, drawing upon the previous experiences of Os Novos Baianos, Moraes Moreira and Pepeu Gomes, and a post-Tropicalia movement. In his first album "A Cor do Som" (WEA 1977), had as members Dadi (bass), Mú Carvalho (composition and keyboards), Armandinho (composition and Bahia guitar) and Gustavo Schroeter (drums). From the second album "Live In Montreux," Ary Dias, percussion, becomes part of the band.

Blending rock, regional rhythms and classical music, adopted the name "A Cor do Som" at the suggestion of Caetano Veloso, and then in its first year, were invited to the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, becoming the first musical group Brazil to attend the event - it is worth noting that the Montreux show yielded a live album. After the album "Mudança de Estação" - 1981, left the band Armandinho and is replaced by Victor Biglione writes that "Magia Tropical" - 1982 and "As Quatro Fases do Amor" - 1983. In 1984 launched an all-instrumental album "Intuição" without Victor Biglione and with special participation of Egberto Gismonti, Tulio Mourão and Perinho Santana. In following year with Perinho Santana on guitar release "Som da Cor". In 1987 a new change. Saem Perinho Santana and Gustavo. Comes Jorginho Gomes on drums and Didi Gomes on bass. Dadi then takes the guitar. In 1996, the group teamed up again with the original formation to record the album "A Cor do Som Ao Vivo no Circo", receiving the award Sharp for best instrumental group.

In 2005, with the original lineup, the group performed at the Canecão, in Rio de Janeiro. The show featured a special appearance by Caetano Veloso, Daniela Mercury, Moraes Moreira, Davi Moraes and Coral Canarinhos of Petrópolis, in addition to the musicians Nicolas Krassic (violinno), Nivaldo Ornelas (soprano sax), Mark Nimrichter (accordion and keyboards); Jorge Helder (bass, guitar and baixolão), Jorginho Gomes (drums and percussion), Marcus Tullius (flute), Francisco Gonçalves (oboe), Bernardo Bessler (violin), Marie Christine (viola) and Marcio Mallard (cello).
