[Buddy Childers started out in 1942 playing lead trumpet for Stan Kenton at the age of 16. He was on hundreds of recordings over the years. This album is a different side of his playing, all flugelhorn, no double “C”s. In a word, it’s pretty. Full string section and excellent rhythm section. Russ Garcia, a well known arranger and teacher, did the arrangements. Nice mellow jazz on standards. Not “smooth jazz”.
Michael Young
The mellow fluency of Buddy Childers flugelhorn is perfectly matched by the warmth and low register sensuality of the soaring, swooping, sweeping strings of Russell Garcia.
The musical settings created by veteran composer/conductor/arranger Russ Garcia reach depths of the human psyche that have not been plumbed since Gordon Jenkins scored albums for Mr Sinatra.
This is music for sharing with that special other person, when perhaps it's cold and damp outside and you are curled up in your own private protected world.
Just let yourself go, wallow in it.
This is sexual healing for the sensitive sympathetic soul, from the man who has arranged and produced some of the finest recordings by some of the finest performers in smooth jazz, from Stan Getz to Mel Torme.
Here Russ Garcia creates a creamy rich tapestry of strings into which the one-time Stan Kenton/ Maynard Ferguson big band trumpeter, Buddy Childers, weaves a very different kind of rounded-tone flugelhorn magic.
If you've got an ounce of feeling in your body - in your heart - buy this album now.
You won't be disappointed.
