On their new album "Kammin Jaaretti," the renowned jazz trio Hot Heros craft mesmerizing forest jazz.

Saxophonist Sami Sippola and double bassist Ville Rauhala have been navigating the depths of jazz together for over two decades. Originally part of the wild and unpredictable Black Motor, their musical journey evolved into Hot Heros when they combined forces with the masterful drummer and percussionist Janne Tuomi.

Hot Heros have made a name for themselves as a fierce live band and a hardworking studio outfit. Alongside their original works, they’ve collaborated with talents like pianist Iro Haarla, rap poet Hannibal, and guitarist Matti Salo. Their music, often influenced by folk traditions, embraces both ecstatic, spiritual free jazz and lyrical, sophisticated compositions.

Released by Puro Recordings, "Kammin Jaaretti" draws inspiration from nature, mysticism, and the realms of fantasy and beatnik literature. Sippola explains: “I felt like Jaaretti, a musically and materially humble folk composer living in a turf hut—a rural village version of Keith Jarrett.” While the tracks capture some of Jarrett’s virtues, their style aligns more closely with Bo Hansson’s prog-jazz and the iconic ECM releases of the 1970s.

The album opens with the title track’s languid soul-jazz groove. Following this, "Yhä lähempänä leimuavat liekit," Rauhala’s sole composition on the album, unfolds as a mystery, beginning with a foreboding pattern of restrained notes from the bass and saxophone before climaxing in a fiery eruption. "Nummen alla nukkuva" starts as a serene jazz waltz, but surprising twists in its evolving structure lead it towards progressive jazz. Another standout track, "Halla," stretches over nine minutes, combining a catchy theme with a tense structure and collective improvisation that resonates with cosmic wisdom.

Hot Heros’ unique "forest jazz" serves as a refreshing alternative to the often elitist and clinical side of conservatory jazz. Hot Heros dare to be both approachable and distinctive, with no need to prove anything. Their profound understanding of various jazz styles shines through in every moment.
