Award winning London-based Hungarian pianist Matyas Gayer is among the leading voices in a new generation of musicians forging their own style informed by the jazz piano tradition. The two time finalist of the Montreux Jazz Piano Competition joins forces with London jazz legends Steve Brown and Dave Green in a musical homage to the city they call home.
Following his 2018 debut on Fresh Sound New Talent ‘Never Ending Story’, Gayer has gone on to perform at leading clubs and venues all over Europe including Montmartre Copenhagen, Porgy and Bess Vienna, Jamboree Barcelona and Half Note Athens with the likes of Scott Hamilton, Luis Bonilla and Carla Cook.
His new trio represents the convergence of three generations, each bringing their own perspective and depth to their collective interpretation of the genre.
Dave Green started his journey playing with his friend and neighbor Charlie Watts (The Rolling Stones), and went on to accompany a host of American jazz giants during his time in the original Ronnie Scott’s House Band including Sonny Rollins, Ben Webster and Coleman Hawkins.
Steve Brown is one of the UK’s most sought after jazz drummers – since his studies in New York in the early 90’s he’s gone on to perform and tour with the likes of Benny Golson and Barry Harris and is a longtime member of saxophonist Scott Hamilton’s band.
A collection of original compositions as well as arrangements of standard repertoire and classical pieces including ‘On Green Dolphin Street’, ‘Solitude’ and Chopin’s ‘Waltz in E Minor’, each piece was selected to reflect Gayer’s experiences during his time in London over the past few years.
Rooted in experience, joy and love for the jazz tradition, with a palpable sense of searching for his own distinctive voice, Gayer draws from the influence of his jazz piano heroes as well as elements of Classical music as he weaves effortlessly expressive melodies and virtuosic improvisations over the rock-solid, grooving, and playful foundation provided by two of his favorite British instrumentalists.
