This record is pure delight! The choir of Salisbury Cathedral has the most attractive quality, which corresponds to the character of the building itself.
This becomes most evident in Byrd's Ave verum corpus, which equally applies to an excerpt from Brahms' German Requiem, which here becomes an Anglican hymn, its orchestral accompaniment is translated into organ figures, and the heavenly aspirations of the choir sound more like a pamphlet written by people with inner knowledge.
You will hardly hear a more touching version of the treble solo in Blessed be the God and Father — the nameless boy mixes an extraordinarily beautiful tone quality with mature verbal intelligence: it was worth it to capture.
The choral direction here is pleasantly neat and undistorted, as it is throughout the program, but there are one or two unexpected (but quite acceptable) tempo choices. I would choose Purcell's Bell Anthem as the winner for the elegance and sophistication of its excellent handling.
We can say that this applies to the entire record. Richard Seal did it all a little differently."
