Yvonne Sánchez didn’t expect to become a singer, but destiny has brought her down this path. This Polish-Cuban jazz and latin vocalist, with her honey-smooth voice, has wooed audiences across the world. Having performed briefly as a percussionist with some of the top musicians in her native Poland, including Jozef Skrezek, she moved to Germany and left music behind her.
But then in 1994, she moved to Prague where she met saxophonist Mike Tramonte and guitarist Max Voegler, who helped her discover her hidden voice. Within months, Sánchez had become a staple of the Prague jazz scene, playing with the country’s top musicians including bassist Robert Balzar, pianist Jan “Najponk” Knop and saxophonist Karel Ruzicka, Jr. Her vocal repertoire spanned jazz standards by Duke Ellington, Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, to the Bossa Nova sounds of Antonio Carlos Jobim. In 1995, she gave her first concert at Prague’s famed Reduta Jazz Club, where musicians as diverse as Miles Davis to former American president Bill Clinton have played.
She continued to immerse herself in the Prague jazz scene, which culminated in 1998 by being awarded Vocalist of the Year by the prestigious Czech Jazz Society. The journey of a musician is never planned and Yvonne's is no different. Besides her phenomenal success in the Czech Republic, she has performed in Turkey, Slovakia, Germany, Great Britain, Israel, Portugal, France, Latvia, Cuba, Brazil and the United States. These different cultures have acted as a catalyst for her artistic development. As she strays outside conventional jazz, she has embraced the music of her latin roots, Bossa Nova and Samba.
The results of this can be heard on her debut 2001 album “Invitation,” recorded with the renowned Robert Balzar Trio. The following year “Invitation” was nominated for a Czech Grammy and to date is the all-time best selling Czech Jazz CD. Yvonne Sanchez just finished her work on the long awaited album entitled "My Garden" Which was released by Warner Music Czech Republic September 1st, 2008. In "My Garden" Yvonne expresses the creative fusion of her musical influences through her own original compositions. Yvonne Sanchez, since the release of MY GARDEN received two Grammy nominations for Album of the Year and Jazz Record of the year. Congradulations Yvonne, one year after the release of MY GARDEN, Warner Music announces "MY GARDEN" reaches GOLD!
