Björn Petersson Kvartetts third album ”En konstnärs handbok” (an Artists handbook) is a record of songs with a jazzy quality and are a musical depiction of the struggling artists small and big problems and to a certain degree how to cope. The inspiration to create this record appeared after have read Houellebecqs ”To stay alive”. In a passage of the book praises pain and suffering as a great source to create art from. This inspired to the song ”Älska allt motstånd” (Love all resistance) where resistance, setbacks and hate portrays as something lovable.
The music is calm and delectable with intricate string arrangements and sporadic expressive bursts and swing as in the song ”En dröm och ensligt värmande” (a Dream and lonesome warming), where the strings compliantly supports the vocals and then falls down in something that deteriorates more and more. A way of portraying how a thought can plummet you down in to something chaotic before you find a way to cope with it.
The record is released together with a comic book that illustrates the scenes from Björns life where the inspiration to the songs come from. The comics continues the tradition of a branch in autobiographic comics where you choose to portray your rough and rowdy ways.
10th of May the first single ”Ett stulet liv” (a Stolen life) is released, which portrays the feeling of a wasted life but also about the moments where you are reminded why you insistently continue, accompanied by a prickly dancing drumbeat, a smooth and swinging piano and a pulsating bass.
30th of August the second single ”Värme och köld” (Warmth and cold) is released, an almost six and a half minute long epos about looking back on a time in life that you absolutely want to go back to. The music is circular, it just continues and doesn’t really lands. This illustrates a life that just keep going that you have no control over.
