Trumpeter Marlon Jordan was only 18 when he recorded this set, his debut recording as a leader. Branford Marsalis makes four appearances on tenor; Marlon's brother, flutist Ken Jordan, is heard on the opening "Jepetto's Despair," and there are two duets with bassist/pianist Elton Heron. Four standards (including "Cherokee" and "Stardust") are performed, along with originals by Jordan and Heron. At this point in time, Jordan was heavily influenced by Wynton Marsalis and, to a lesser extent, Miles Davis; he did not yet have a voice of his own. However, Marlon Jordan's playing was reasonably inventive, and he definitely was technically skilled, making this set of both musical and historic interest.
