There are not many violinists who can swing with the ease and grace of Sam Bardfeld. Joined by guitarist Ken Wessel, bassist Drew Gress, and drummer Michael Sarin, Bardfeld seems at home in a relaxed style that incorporates so much of the history of jazz. The violinist wrote all the charts except "Have You Met Miss Jones" and the spiritual "Walk Through this World with Me." While there is a variety of style, it all works as an integrated whole, the musicians eschewing postmodernism for a more stately, more traditional feel. The strings take the place of horns, each of their solos moving through the changes with loving care. Gress and Sarin have built reputations for adventurous playing, and their inclusion in the quartet adds enormously as they serve primarily (but not exclusively) supporting roles. While the recording may not set any new standards, it is delightful and fun, and maintains standards of excellence throughout. ~ Steven A. Loewy, Rovi
