Son Palenque - Kutu Prieta Pa Saranguia (2017)

The band Son Palenque, founded in 1980 by Justo Valdés, has released its 16th album, which contains 12 new songs that reflect the strong musical traditions of San Basilio de Palenque. This record features different rhythms from champeta to bulerengue, chalupa to lumbabu. Son Palenque collaborated with a variety of artists to create the album, including Michi Sarmiento of Colombian Caribbean and Mario Galeano and Pedro Ojeda of Frente Cumbiero and Romperayo. The band continues to experiment with tradition, innovation and unexpected fusions. All the songs on the album are influenced by different African rhythms such as soukous, afrobeat and highlife, but Son Palenque combines them with palenquero rhythms such as Bullerengue, Chalupa and Cantos Lumbalu. The album is released by Palenque Records, a label founded in 1996 by producer Lucas Silva and a pioneer of Afro-Colombian music.
