Amira Medunjanin - Homeland (2024) [Hi-Res]

Amira Medunjanin is the most renowned interpreter of Sevdalinka, a genre of songs in the centuries-old Bosnian musical tradition of Sevdah. She has intensely explored the emotional expressiveness of Sevdah and playfully given it new forms with her powerful voice. The "Bosnian Billie Holiday" has collaborated with accordionist Merima Kljuco as well as the Mostar Sevdah Reunion and is part of Jordi Savall's famous ensemble Hesperion XXI. With her innovative interpretations of the Bosnian musical tradition, she has become known far beyond the borders of her homeland. The British magazine Songlines ranked her among the top ten World Music Divas. In Salzburg, she will present her new album Homeland, but will also interpret older songs, such as those from the album For Him and Her.

Sevdah means love in Turkish and black bile in Arabic. It is not easy to describe the style of these songs in one word; the closest term might be desire. Like Duende in Spanish or Fado in Portuguese music, Sevdah encompasses many meanings: longing, sadness, melancholy, feverish desire, love, unfulfilled love, endless love, ....
