Trumpeter Pete Rodriguez's new album I’m Pete Rodriguez, Volume 1 is a bold assertion of his musical identity and personal journey. The son of legendary salsero Pete "El Conde" Rodriguez, Pete has faced challenges in establishing himself apart from his father's legacy and overcoming assumptions about his identity. After serving in the Army and studying music at Rutgers, Rodriguez moved to Austin, Texas, where he has lived for 12 years, balancing life as a musician and educator.

Rodriguez assembled a new quartet for this album, featuring young talents like drummer Koleby Royston, bassist Raul Reyes, pianist Esteban Castro, and woodwind player Jon Beshay. The recording features original compositions that reflect Rodriguez's experiences, including facing betrayal, loss, and his military background. Standout pieces include the assertive "Jesus Said Show Affection to Your Enemies, I Say Fuck That!" and the heartfelt ballad "Don’t Help Me, Help The Bear."

Rodriguez’s compositions are complex, soulful, and deeply personal, often inspired by the struggles he’s faced. This album marks the first of two volumes recorded in 2024, showcasing Rodriguez’s dynamic playing and composing skills, with a demand for listeners to acknowledge him as an individual artist.
