Dave Vettraino - A Bird Shaped Shadow (2024) [Hi-Res]

Dave Vettraino, a Chicago-based audio engineer and multi-instrumentalist, has worked behind the scenes for nearly 15 years, producing and mixing for various bands, including Deeper, Melkbelly, and Lala Lala, as well as working with International Anthem Recording Company on jazz projects. While he’s renowned in the background, Vettraino also creates his own music, highlighted by his solo debut Exercise in 2020, an ambient and introspective record. His new album, A Bird Shaped Shadow, released by Ruination Record Co., builds on his style with a more organic, collaborative sound inspired by Haruki Murakami. Featuring Illinois talents like Lia Kohl and Macie Stewart on strings, the album is instrumental, conjuring morning light with warm, serene compositions. Unlike his improvisational past, Vettraino’s approach here included notated music, blending earthy improvisations with structured melodies. His vision celebrates Chicago’s tight-knit music community, marked by creativity and resilience, reflecting the city’s “second city” identity as a nurturing ground for unique artistry.
