Liverpool’s favourite bubblegum horror punks, Zombina & The Skeletones are back with their first album in a decade. “Don’t kick my coffin, cos I don’t wanna wake up,” screams Zombina… Well, someone certainly has kicked it, and the band from under your bed have woken up, shaken off the cobwebs and risen from the crypt to exorcise their first album proper in ten years.
When you’ve been undead for that long, a decade is merely the blink of a decomposed eye, so heed ‘The Call Of Zombina.’ Fittingly, that is the title of this exquisite release on 9×9 Records; a groovy label based in the fusty catacombs of the band’s hometown of Liverpool.
Zombina & The Skeletones’ trademark blend of bubblegum horror punk paints pictures of a B-movie technicolor era when everything was cool [ghoul]. More so on the aforementioned Don’t Kick My Coffin, which is 2 minutes and 48 seconds of unwholesome perfection.
The resonance of keyboards rain down heavily across the album, like an electronic, but welcome insurgence, particularly on the sparkling I’m Horrified. Whereas when Zombina walks in the Valley Of The Shadow, she is accompanied by a sassy saxophone.
The band (de)formed in 1999 and their disease quickly spread globally, so we salute their return. For a horror laden album that tells you dead birds are falling from the sky, The Call Of Zombina can actually stimulate the driest serotonin in the deadest of zombies. Join them on the ghost train to oblivion – you’ll never look back…
