In recent years we have always enjoyed playing in special places, museums, churches, factory halls and in enchanted lost places.
As these were special "hall rooms", we usually played these concerts rhythm-free, without any grooves or drums. Playing with the room, reacting to reflections made it more or less another player and the improvisation incredibly exciting.
We have been thinking for a long time about recording the improvisations that arise in this way.
During the "Poems Sessions" between Christmas and New Year 23, our "Across Divides" journey began more by chance. Peter and I prepared the quartet recordings and played a deep, expansive, ambient improvisation to check the recording, and so the first tracks for "Across Divides" came about more by chance in the wonderful post-industrial NoWatt ambience. We followed the work on it for weeks, parallel to the creation of the Poems songs, and perhaps the "Divides" are also the dark mirror of the "Poems". Long, dark, meandering soundscapes, trumpet sounds wafting from the distance and time. An infinite amount of time. The term "ambient" has unfortunately been badly maltreated in recent years. If you approach it in the way Brian Eno did in the late 70s, then you might get a little closer to the "Divides".
