Joe Harnell, born August 2, 1924, in the Bronx, began piano at six and performed in Klezmer and Catskill bands by 14. In the 1950s and 60s, he served as pianist, arranger, and musical director for icons like Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, and Marlene Dietrich.

He won a Grammy in 1962 for his dance orchestra recording of "Fly Me to the Moon," and earned two additional Grammy nominations for his Bossa Nova arrangements.
