Ellis Larkins - Blue And Sentimental (1958)

Great small combo work from pianist Ellis Larkins – a session of sad tunes and ballads, linked together with a few original tunes and some haunting interludes! About half the set has Larkins playing only with bass accompaniment from Joe Benjamin, and the rest of the tunes feature additional guitar from Skeeter Best, plus drums – and overall, this limited instrumentation works in a wonderfully dreamy and evocative way. Titles include "Interlude 2", "Time", "Four Bar Intro With Tag", "Am I Blue", "At Loose Ends", "Blue Prelude", and "Ode To Marie".
