Paulo Alvarado, renowned Guatemalan rock musician and cellist, is releasing his theatrical soundtracks on vinyl for the first time. These works have been created since 1992 and are characterized by their use of quiet/loud dynamics and crooked rhythm. The album “Antigua” features the work of an artist who was originally known for his participation in the rock band Alux Nahual in Guatemala. He then became a “disembodied actor” and provided sound in stage productions by choreographic and theater companies such as Sabrina Castillo, Bettina Barkhausen, Hoam Solo, Javier Pacheco and Alfredo Porras. In these works, one hears but does not see his contributions, which complemented the corporeality and voices of the actors with the use of synthesizers, strings and percussion instruments. From ethereal backdrops to the expansive soundscape of “Antigua,” Paulo Alvarado's work is featured in five compositions that recall other musicians including Rex Ilusivii/Suba's Mitar Subotic and James Ferraro.
