A resurgence of spiritual jazz, reminiscent of its revolutionary roots, has reappeared among references in the new British jazz scene. However, John Coltrane's influence, after shaping 1970s jazz and subsequently stalling its evolution by inspiring a wave of imitators, had considerably waned over the past three decades among younger jazz musicians. Many had turned to modern or traditional styles instead. Thus, the debut album by a quartet of young French musicians embracing Coltrane's modal jazz from the early 1960s comes as both a surprise and a revelation.

While their music may lack revolutionary innovation and might be labeled as revivalist, the quartet's commitment and emotional depth shine. With Antoine Fleury on piano, Anthony Jouravsky on double bass, Mailo Rakotonanahary on drums, and Keïta Janota on saxophones, their masterful playing and enthusiasm create a compelling energy that reconnects with the fundamental essence of jazz.

Guided by Fleury, whose piano style echoes McCoy Tyner’s hallucinatory, percussive fluidity (perhaps even more than Coltrane’s), the group delivers long, lyrical, and incantatory sequences. Their sound is organic, sensual, and collaborative, hinting at the potential to evolve further. This debut album, while imperfect, is highly captivating and leaves listeners eagerly anticipating their next release.
