Greg Bobulinski - East Of The Sun (1995)

Greg Bobulinski is a fine bop-oriented trumpeter; however, this recording is far from flawless. On several occasions, one gets the feeling that the musicians should have gone through the songs one additional time. There are some hesitant and faulty endings ("Just Friends" is a good example) and "A Child Is Born" concludes with tenor saxophonist Bobby Marx breaking up the mood completely due to a squeaky reed. To Bobulinski's credit, he changes the instrumentation on many of the selections, alternating between duets with pianist Bross Townsend, trios with guitarist Daniel Weiss and bassist Tom Kirchmer, and quintets with Marx, Kirchmer, and two drummers. Bobulinski has a nice tone and a solid improvising style. Hopefully in future recordings he will put a little more time into the recording process, so any errors and missteps will be less obvious.~© Scott Yanow /TiVo
